Changing Horizons 2018 - On your marks, Get set, Volunteer

Last year’s award nominated event was one of those ‘I was there’ moments. A real stand out in the working year for all those involved. The effect it had on the young people attending actually made a fair few of us ‘well up’.

When are they?

The actual events are on 22 February at The Winter Gardens in Blackpool and on 14 March at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in Oldham.

So what’s it all about?

Blackpool and Oldham were two places in our region designated opportunity areas. As part of the work in those towns CS Local is putting on these events, to inspire young people in these towns,to be the best version of themselves that they could be.
The event is designed to give them a range of contacts with employers from the public and private sector to give them some activities or learning about work and life skills.
The event last year was a huge success and got some really great feedback from the schools and their pupils.

What does it achieve?

There's also some research that suggest that schoolchildren are 5 times less likely to end up in the NEET bracket (Not in Education, Employment or Training) when they have meaningful contact with employers. Schoolchildren who recall meaningful contact with employers are also likely to earn 16% more than peers without this experience.

Sounds great so what do you need me to do?

Well if you’re able to be available for one or both of the events then our Volunteer coordinators would love to hear from you. There’s a variety of roles to support the smooth running of the day. These include:

  • Cloakroom & Security
  • Outdoor Marshalls
  • Communications & Technical Support
  • Room Leads & Supports
  • Receptionists & Meet and Greet
  • Guides

Some of the roles are all day, some might only be required for assisting getting people into the event initially. You'll also be asked to attend a Venue Walkthrough beforehand - invites will be sent upon selection.

If you're interested then we'll need you to email, doing the following:
  • Title the email either Changing Horizons Blackpool, Changing Horizons Oldham or Changing Horizons Both
  • Put if there is any specific role you are wishing to do.
  • Include details of any accessibility issues you have.
  • Tell us if you were involved in last year's event or not.

Send the email to our Volunteer coordinators -

If you want to look into last year's event a bit more before you commit then put Changing Horizons in the search blog box at the top right of the page and read the blogs about last year's event.

Is there any other way I can help?

Yes - I am looking for some inspirational celebs to make short 30-60 second videos to play to the kids at the start of the day so if you have links to anybody who the young people will know and who might be willing to give 60 seconds of their time to make a post a vid then let me know.

Also we want the event to get some coverage in the local media (papers, radio, TV). If you have any contacts who might be able to attend the event and report on it then please let me know.
