Volunteering opportunities in Somerset schools

classroomThere are a number of upcoming volunteering opportunities to work in schools across Somerset. Activities have been developed with the Somerset Education Business Partnership and schools in the West Somerset area to cover careers, employability and financial awareness.

Opportunities are available with different year groups and in different schools across Somerset as follows:

Assembly presentations in Minehead – 15 March

Volunteers from a mixture of government departments needed to present in assemblies to years 11 and 13 at West Somerset College and years 7/8 at Minehead Middle School and Danesfield School.

To deliver short talks of up to 10-15 minutes about your role and working in the Civil Service. Talks to the college and both Minehead middle schools will be on the same day and run from 8:45am to 11:00am. 

Bridgwater College Academy – 22 March

Volunteers needed to engage year 10 students in an activity relevant to their work. Volunteers can attend up to 4 sessions of 75 minutes, with 35 students in each.

Kings of Wessex Academy – Cheddar – 22 March and 17 May

Volunteers needed to attend the Careers Café from 8.45 a.m. – 9.25 a.m. to tell groups of up to 20 students about their job and department.

Minehead middle schools: Financial Awareness workshops – May / June – 2 x half days

Volunteers needed to work with groups of Year 8 students at Minehead Middle School and Danesfield School delivering financial awareness workshops. A  range of practical and interactive exercises to help pupils improve their understanding of costs, budgeting and managing money. All workshop materials provided in advance.

Minehead middle schools: employability skills workshops – early June – Full day

Volunteers needed to work with groups of Year 6 students at Minehead Middle School and Danesfield School delivering employability workshops. Range of practical and interactive exercises to help attendees to identify the ‘soft’ work skills they already have and how to develop more. All workshop materials provided in advance.

West Somerset College – Mock interviews Date TBC

Volunteers needed to run mock interviews with students from West Somerset College in Minehead.

Please note that you will need to seek approval from your line manager and any travel and subsistence costs must be met by your department. These are volunteering events and can count towards your annual supported volunteering days.
