Young People Promoting the Civil Service

Year 10 Students and Teachers from Heaton Manor School with Clare Garnham, Michele Crawford and Richard Armstrong from CS Local

Students from Heaton Manor School in Newcastle visited the Benton Park View complex as part of a  'Passport to Employment' project they are working on with Civil Service Local. The project is to create an educational  resource appropriate to a year 5 audience to give examples of civil service career pathways at an event they are organising for later in the year at the nearby Benton Park Primary school.

The students were given a guided tour of the new facilities being piloted on the site and attended a meeting with the CS Local team where they heard more about the structure of the civil service, the number of departments and the type of work they carry out. They also found out about the Fast Track apprentice scheme and the Fast Stream Graduate Programme which offers routes of entry into the Civil Service.

This helped put our work into context and it became clear during the discussions that much of what we do impacts on many aspects of the young people's day to day lives. This prompted an exchange of content ideas as thoughts turned toward developing a theme for the project.

Mr Gaskell, Trust Manager from the Ouseburn Learning Trust who is supporting the young people with the project said

I thank  CS Local for the warm welcome afforded to our students from Heaton Manor . They are an incredible bunch of young people and have a real drive to deliver a first rate project on behalf of Civil Service Local and Benton Park Primary School.

We wish the students well and look forward to seeing their project develop.
