Compass pointing to the word leadership

The Civil Service Local Future Leaders Academy is a unique development opportunity, a mix of self-discovery, personal development, team building, and leadership.

This year’s 2020 Academy for the North West, Midlands and South West will take place online. The Academy is designed to help develop a range of competencies required to become managers and leaders of the future. It’s aimed at staff up to and including first line manager level (AA, AO and EO grade) who are keen to develop, have ambition and enthusiasm.

We are looking for people from the North West, Midlands and South West to help make the Academy a success by supporting delegates in one of the following roles:

  • Academy facilitator (EO - Grade 7)

Facilitators will work with a group of 7-8 staff from departments throughout the initial learning phase. You will also need to help them develop a project idea to take forward. Later, in December, at the end of the initial learning phase you will then need to hand over to an Academy coach. Facilitators must be available every Wednesday from 4 November to 9 December inclusive.

  • Academy coach (EO - Grade 7)

Coaches will work with a group formed at the Academy to develop an innovative project idea and deliver it over a period of 12 months. Coaches must be available on 9 December.

  • Academy dragons (Grade 7 and above)

Part of the programme is when delegates (in groups) will be asked to pitch their ideas to a panel of Senior Civil Service ‘Dragons’ in the style of the television programme ‘Dragons Den’. Your role would be to act as a light touch project sponsor for one of these ideas. In addition to attending as a panel member for the idea pitches we also ask that you provide support for the remainder of the year to your chosen project. Dragons must be available on 9 December.

Academies take place across all regions of the UK. If you are outside of one of the three regions above, then your next Academy will be in 2021 and details will be published on the blog nearer the time.
