The five-day Middle Managers’ Academy (MMA) returned in June at the Wintergardens in Blackpool following a successful 2016 launch when members of Civil Service Local’s steering group identified a gap in training opportunities for HEO and SEO leaders.

The second part of the Middle Managers’ Academy was held in Preston at Lancashire Police HQ, so the appearance of TV detectives Kojak and Columbo wasn’t surprising. But the serious message of the event was the importance of middle managers developing themselves so they can be better, more inspiring leaders.
After 5 intense days packed with challenges, 8 groups of enthusiastic civil servants left the Academy in September to begin putting their chosen projects into action. As the head coach, I was keen to see how they were getting on.
